How Green Allowance Works

Say something like: "If I took on energy projects at home and saved you money on your electric bill, would you be willing to share some of the money you save with me -- say half or more? Or agree to some kind of reward?"

Find actions that suit your household. Click on them, and how-to instructions appear along with estimated or actual savings in dollars and trees. For example: change just one incandescent bulb to a compact fluorescent and save $5 and 0.2 trees per year.

When you click "I did it!" on one of our garden pages, watch as -
a tree gets
healthier
a piggy bank
appears under it
money falls
into the bank
your score goes
up, indicating your
total $$$ and trees
saved to date.
You and your parents receive an emailed Scorecard from Green Allowance, regularly reporting how much $$$, energy and trees you've saved since the last Scorecard.
Well, how much energy can you save? If changing one incandescent light bulb to a compact fluorescent one saves $5 per year, changing twelve will save $5 every month. Depending on the deal with your parents, that means some portion of an extra $5 every month for a whole year added to your Green Allowance - and that's only one of dozens of things you can do to save energy.
Results may vary. If you are a "Real Data User," that means we've partnered with your electric utility and your savings are based on the actual amount of energy your household saves. If your electric utility hasn't yet partnered with us, you'll be a "Basic User" and we'll estimate your savings based on average American consumption. Either way, you...
